Calcite has been in Minecraft since the 1.17 Caves & Cliffs update, but the pale stone block suddenly matters more. Mojang’s Minecraft 26.4 winter drop turns it into a full building set with stairs, slabs, walls, pillars and polished bricks. You can’t craft calcite or buy it from villagers, so every block you use comes from the world.
As of writing, calcite generates in three places: amethyst geodes, the Stony Peaks biome and the new Ice Caves biome (test builds only). Any pickaxe mines it, including wood. The official 26.4 Snapshot 7 notes, published November 3, 2026, confirm the new calcite recipes.
Where to find calcite in Minecraft
Each source suits a different stage of a world. Here’s how they compare:
| Source | Availability | Where to look | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amethyst geodes | All current versions | Underground, below Y 30 | Early game, steady yield |
| Stony Peaks | All current versions | Mountain tops, in streaks through stone | Safe daytime mining |
| Ice Caves | 26.4 snapshots and Bedrock Preview only | Caves beneath cold biomes | Large builds once 26.4 releases |
1. Amethyst geodes
Geodes are round underground structures with three layers: smooth basalt outside, calcite in the middle and amethyst inside. They generate below Y 30, and many break into caves, ravines and the ocean floor, where the purple interior stands out.
A single geode gives a few stacks of calcite. However, leave the Budding Amethyst alone if you plan to farm Amethyst Shards later. Budding Amethyst drops nothing when broken, even with Silk Touch, so the geode loses its value once you clear it.
2. Stony Peaks
Stony Peaks is a high mountain biome with bare stone instead of snow cover. Calcite appears there in thick pale streaks through the stone, often exposed on cliff faces.
This is the safer option for new players, since you mine in daylight instead of in dark caves. Hostile mobs still spawn at night, so plan a quick shelter.
3. Ice Caves (Minecraft 26.4 test builds)
The Ice Caves biome generates beneath cold Overworld biomes and is built mainly from Packed Ice and Calcite. That makes it the largest calcite source in the game once the winter drop ships.
Right now, you can only reach Ice Caves in Java 26.4 snapshots or in Bedrock Preview with Experimental Features on. Watch your footing inside, since Brittle Ice breaks under you and Frostbites throw Ice Balls.

Steps to mine calcite in Minecraft
- Craft any pickaxe. A wooden pickaxe works, though iron or diamond mines faster.
- Find a geode, Stony Peaks biome or Ice Cave using the locations above.
- Equip the pickaxe and break the calcite block. Your hand or any other tool destroys it without a drop.
- Collect the dropped block. Calcite stacks to 64.
Calcite has a hardness of 0.75, softer than stone, so even a basic pickaxe clears a geode shell quickly. Silk Touch isn’t needed.
New calcite blocks in Minecraft 26.4
Snapshot 7 added three calcite block sets. Every variant can also be made in a Stonecutter.
| Block set | How to make it | Variants |
|---|---|---|
| Calcite | Base block, mined | Pillar, Slab, Stair, Wall |
| Polished Calcite | 4 Calcite in a 2×2 grid | Slab, Stair, Wall |
| Polished Calcite Bricks | 4 Polished Calcite in a 2×2 grid | Slab, Stair, Wall |
Bedrock players get the same blocks in Minecraft Preview 26.70.23, released November 3, 2026. Notably, Snapshot 7 also gives Calcite, Polished Calcite and Polished Calcite Bricks the Slow Bouncy Sulfur Cube archetype. These are test-version recipes, so details could still change before release.
Other ways to get calcite
In Creative mode, search for calcite in the inventory. You can switch game modes if your world allows it.

With cheats on, type /give @s minecraft:calcite 64 in chat. Our Minecraft commands list covers the rest of the syntax.

Wrapping up
Calcite is non-renewable in survival, so geodes and Stony Peaks stay the go-to sources until 26.4 arrives. Once Ice Caves go live, gathering enough for a full build gets far easier.
Mojang hasn’t dated the winter drop yet. Its 2026 release pattern points to Tuesday, December 15, 2026, but that is a projection, not an announcement.
No. Calcite has no crafting or smelting recipe. You can only mine it, though 26.4 lets you turn it into polished calcite and bricks.
No. Any pickaxe drops the calcite block. Breaking it by hand or with another tool drops nothing.
Geodes generate below Y 30 and can reach the bottom of the world at Y -64.
No. No villager trade offers calcite, which makes it non-renewable in survival.
Only in test builds. Java players need a 26.4 snapshot, and Bedrock players need Minecraft Preview with Experimental Features on, until the winter drop releases.
