Mojang released Minecraft 26.4 Snapshot 7 on November 3, 2026. The notes call it the final set of gameplay features for the fourth and last game drop of the year. The winter drop is built around Ice Caves and the Frostbite, a zombie variant that throws ice. Mojang has not announced a release date or an official name yet.
Based on Mojang’s own 2026 schedule, the drop will most likely arrive on Tuesday, December 15, 2026. December 8 is the earlier possibility. The update is free on Java and Bedrock, and the official Snapshot 7 changelog lists the final feature set.
Minecraft 26.4 release date: Why December 15 is the best bet

Wilderness Bound (26.3) went feature-complete with its Snapshot 7 on August 4, 2026 and released on September 15, 2026, six weeks later. The same six-week gap from November 3 lands exactly on December 15.
The day of the week points the same way. Mojang’s last four drops all launched on a Tuesday:
| Game drop | Version | Release date | Day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mounts of Mayhem | 1.21.11 | December 9, 2025 | Tuesday |
| Tiny Takeover | 26.1 | March 24, 2026 | Tuesday |
| Chaos Cubed | 26.2 | June 16, 2026 | Tuesday |
| Wilderness Bound | 26.3 | September 15, 2026 | Tuesday |
| Winter drop | 26.4 | Not announced (December 15 expected) | Tuesday |
Mojang usually confirms the date about two weeks ahead. It announced the Mounts of Mayhem date on November 26, 2025, 13 days before launch. If that pattern holds, expect the official date in late November or early December. A slip past the holidays seems unlikely, since last year’s winter drop landed in early December.
What’s confirmed in the Minecraft 26.4 winter drop
Snapshots 3 through 7 added every feature below. Snapshot 7 marks the set as final, so these features should ship. Smaller balance numbers can still change before launch.
- Ice Caves: A new cave biome under cold Overworld biomes. It is made of Packed Ice and Calcite, has no Glow Lichen, and spawns Strays and Frostbites.
- Ice Crystal: A light-emitting block, similar to Amethyst Clusters, that you can place in any direction.
- Icicles: Ceiling and floor spikes that grow up to 5 blocks long away from light. They damage anything that falls onto them.
- Frostbite: A zombie variant that switches between melee hits and Ice Ball throws. Zombies and Husks that enter Powder Snow turn into Frostbites.
- Ice Ball: A Frostbite drop that deals 4 damage, scaled by velocity, with knockback.
- Freezing effect: A status effect that gradually freezes the target. Mobs vulnerable to freezing take five times normal damage while affected.
- Potions and Arrows of Freezing: Brewed with Ice Balls. Our Potion of Freezing guide covers the recipe.
- Brittle Ice: Cracks and breaks under most entities. It generates only in Ice Caves.
- New block sets: Packed Ice Bricks, Snow Bricks, and calcite pillars, slabs, stairs and walls in polished and brick variants.
- Cold Sulfur Cube: Made by feeding a Sulfur Cube Blue Ice. It leaves Frosted Ice on water as it moves, similar to Frost Walker. Details are in our Snapshot 6 breakdown.
- “Flurry” music disc: A track by Hyper Potions, found in igloo basement chests.
- Jukebox playlists: A chest placed on a Jukebox plays its discs in order.
- Other Players screen: Replaces Social Interactions on Java and adds friend search and sorting.

Mechanics that change how you’ll play the drop
Several snapshot details matter more than the headline features:
- Leather armor does double duty. Wearing any piece stops nearby Zombies and Skeletons from converting into Frostbites or Strays. It also protects you from freezing damage, though it does not remove the Freezing effect.
- Fire cancels Freezing as of Snapshot 7. A Flint and Steel or Fire Aspect becomes a real counter.
- Brittle Ice is a trap. It breaks under you but not under Frostbites, and since Snapshot 6 it no longer cracks under Strays either.
- Water defeats Frostbites. A Frostbite that stays underwater too long turns back into a regular Zombie.
- Strays spread out. They now spawn in frozen oceans, frozen peaks and snowy slopes as well.
- Java performance may vary. The Default graphics setting currently picks OpenGL or Vulkan at random on each launch. Mojang calls this temporary, so if frame rates swing between sessions, set the API manually.

How to try the winter drop features early
On Java, open the launcher’s Installations tab, enable Snapshots, and select the latest 26.4 snapshot. Back up your worlds first, because Mojang warns that testing builds can corrupt saves.
On Bedrock, Ice Caves and the Frostbite have appeared under Experimental Features since Minecraft Preview 26.60.29 (September 30, 2026). The current 26.70 previews add Brittle Ice and Jukebox playlists. For background on the Bedrock side, see our Bedrock 26.60 roundup, and our Java vs Bedrock comparison covers how the two editions differ.

What Mojang hasn’t revealed yet
- The official name. Wilderness Bound got its name only days before release, so a late reveal is normal.
- The release date. The December 15 estimate above is a projection from Mojang’s 2026 pattern, not an announcement.
- A mystery block. Snapshot 7 says a new decorative block exists “somewhere” in the game and gives no details.
- The Bedrock version number. The previews point to 26.70, but Mojang has not confirmed it.
The Sift, the new dimension announced at Minecraft Live on September 26, 2026, is not part of 26.4. Mojang has slated it for 2027.
Wrapping up
With features locked, the remaining snapshots and pre-releases should focus on bug fixes and balance. The next milestone is Mojang’s release date post. If it follows last year’s timing, that post should land within the next three weeks.
Which feature are you most looking forward to? Let us know in the comments below.
No. As of November 5, 2026, 26.4 is in the Java snapshot and Bedrock Preview stage, with Snapshot 7 as the latest build.
Seven so far. Snapshot 3 (October 6, 2026) added most of the content, and Snapshot 7 (November 3, 2026) completed the feature set.
Every 2026 game drop so far launched on both editions on the same day, so a joint release is likely.
No. It prevents freezing damage, but the effect stays active. Fire removes Freezing as of Snapshot 7.
No. Mojang confirmed the Sift for 2027, so it will arrive in a later drop.
