As of Java Edition 26.3 (Wilderness Bound, released September 15, 2026) and Bedrock 26.60 (released October 27, 2026), armor accepts the same enchantments it has for years. The Bedrock 26.60 update added Ice Caves behind an experimental toggle, but it left armor enchantments alone.
The upcoming Ice Caves drop doesn’t change them either. Mojang’s 26.4 Snapshot 7 notes list the drop’s final gameplay features, and none of them touch armor enchantments. Unlike swords, armor math works the same on both editions, because Bedrock 1.18.30 brought Protection in line with Java.
Best Minecraft armor enchantments at a glance
| Rank | Enchantment | Max level | Slot | Main job |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Protection | IV | All four pieces | 16% less damage per piece |
| 2 | Mending | I | All four pieces | Repairs armor with XP |
| 3 | Unbreaking | III | All four pieces | 30% of hits cost no durability |
| 4 | Feather Falling | IV | Boots | 48% less fall damage |
| 5 | Swift Sneak | III | Leggings | Sneak at 75% of walking speed |
1. Protection
Max level: IV
Editions: Java, Bedrock
Conflicts with: Fire, Blast and Projectile Protection
Each level cuts damage by 4%, so Protection IV on all four pieces gives 64%. Enchantments can cut damage by 80% at most, and Protection alone can’t get there in survival.

Specialized protections count double for their own damage type, at 8% per level. Swap your chestplate to Blast Protection IV, and explosions hit the 80% cap while general reduction drops to 48%. That trade only makes sense for a creeper farm or crystal-heavy PvP.
Protection also covers fall damage, and on Bedrock it reduces Poison, Wither and Instant Damage. It does nothing against the void, /kill or the Warden’s sonic boom.
2. Mending
Max level: I
Editions: Java, Bedrock
Conflicts with: Nothing on armor
Mending repairs 2 durability per XP point. Each orb picks one damaged item at random from your hands and armor slots, so a fully enchanted set competes with your sword for every orb.
Enchanting tables never offer Mending. Librarian villagers sell it at any level, unless your world runs the Villager Trade Rebalance experiment. In that case, only master-level swamp librarians stock it.
3. Unbreaking
Max level: III
Editions: Java, Bedrock
Conflicts with: Nothing on armor
Unbreaking is far weaker on armor than on tools. Level III saves only 30% of durability hits on armor, against 75% on a sword, so your chestplate lasts about 1.43 times longer.
That gap is why Unbreaking ranks below Mending here. Treat it as a partner enchantment: every saved durability point leaves more XP for the next piece in the Mending queue.
4. Feather Falling
Max level: IV
Editions: Java, Bedrock
Conflicts with: Nothing on boots
Feather Falling cuts fall damage by 12% per level, up to 48%. It also stacks with Protection on the same boots, which matters more than its own number.
Four Protection IV pieces plus Feather Falling IV boots push fall damage past the 80% cap, so falls are the one damage type a standard set fully maxes out. It also reduces ender pearl damage and Elytra ground crashes, but not crashes into walls.
5. Swift Sneak
Max level: III
Editions: Java, Bedrock
Conflicts with: Nothing on leggings
Normal sneaking moves at 30% of walking speed. Swift Sneak adds 15% per level, so level III gets you to 75%, and crawling speeds up too.

It earns the spot because leggings have no other exclusive enchantment, and because it’s hard to come by. Swift Sneak only appears in Ancient City chests, roughly 23.2% of the time per chest. It never shows up at an enchanting table, so a book and an anvil are your only route.
Why Thorns missed the list
Thorns gives each piece a 15% chance per level to hurt attackers. However, every trigger costs that piece 2 extra durability, and the damage from one hit doesn’t stack across pieces.
On a full Thorns III set, you burn through armor faster for a small payoff. It also eats into the XP Mending needs, which works against your top two picks.
Situational picks worth a second set
Respiration III and Aqua Affinity belong on a helmet for ocean monuments. Depth Strider III helps underwater, but it conflicts with Frost Walker, so pick one per pair of boots.
Soul Speed boosts movement on soul sand and soul soil in the Nether. Since it burns boot durability, keep it on a spare pair instead of your main boots.
For applying books in the cheapest order, the anvil method in our sword enchantments guide works the same for armor. To test a set before spending XP, use /enchant in a creative world with our Minecraft cheats and commands list.
Wrapping up
Armor enchantments have stayed stable through every 2026 drop, and both editions now share the same math. The next test is the Ice Caves drop, where the Freezing effect appears and leather armor protects against it. Keep a spare leather set handy before you explore with our Ice Caves guide or brew a Potion of Freezing.
Protection IV is the best single pick because it reduces almost every damage type. For long-term value, Mending comes a close second.
Not against general damage. Four Protection IV pieces give 64%, and only specialized protections or Feather Falling can push a specific damage type to the 80% cap.
Yes. They don’t conflict, and the pair is the standard boot setup.
Only in Ancient City chests. Villagers don’t sell it, and enchanting tables can’t roll it.
No. They’re mutually exclusive, so a pair of boots can carry only one.
