As of Java Edition 26.3 (Wilderness Bound, released September 15, 2026) and Bedrock 26.60 (released October 27, 2026), a sword accepts the same 10 enchantments it has for years. The Bedrock 26.60 update added Ice Caves behind an experimental toggle, but it left sword enchantments untouched.
The upcoming Ice Caves drop doesn’t change them either. Mojang’s 26.4 Snapshot 7 notes list the final gameplay features for the drop, and none of them touch sword enchantments. What does differ is how each edition calculates damage, which is why the Java vs Bedrock gap matters for this list.
Best Minecraft sword enchantments at a glance
| Rank | Enchantment | Max level | Editions | Main job |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sharpness | V | Java, Bedrock | Extra damage against every mob |
| 2 | Mending | I | Java, Bedrock | Repairs the sword with XP |
| 3 | Unbreaking | III | Java, Bedrock | 75% of hits cost no durability |
| 4 | Looting | III | Java, Bedrock | More and rarer mob drops |
| 5 | Sweeping Edge | III | Java only | Stronger sweep attacks on groups |
1. Sharpness
Max level: V
Editions: Java, Bedrock
Conflicts with: Smite, Bane of Arthropods
Sharpness V adds +3 damage on Java but +6 on Bedrock, because Bedrock uses a different formula. A diamond sword hits for 10 on Java and 14 on Bedrock with Sharpness V.

Importantly, you can’t roll Sharpness V on a diamond or netherite sword at an enchanting table. Only golden swords get it there, so plan on a Sharpness V book and an anvil.
For a dedicated zombie or skeleton farm, swap in Smite V. It adds +12.5 damage against undead mobs on Java (Bedrock rounds it down), more than four times what Sharpness V adds.
2. Mending
Max level: I
Editions: Java, Bedrock
Conflicts with: Nothing on a sword
Mending repairs 2 durability per XP point you collect. Orbs go to damaged Mending gear before your XP bar, and the game picks one damaged item at random per orb.
You won’t find Mending at an enchanting table. It comes from librarian villager trades, fishing and loot chests, which makes it the most valuable book on this list to hunt down early.
3. Unbreaking
Max level: III
Editions: Java, Bedrock
Conflicts with: Nothing on a sword
At level III, three of every four hits cost no durability, so your sword lasts about four times longer. On its own, that delays the problem.
Paired with Mending, it solves it. Fewer durability losses mean each XP orb covers more of the damage, and the sword effectively stops wearing out.
4. Looting
Max level: III
Editions: Java, Bedrock
Conflicts with: Nothing on a sword
Looting raises the maximum of common drops by 1 per level and adds 1 percentage point per level to rare and equipment drops. On Java, a mob’s chance to drop its gear climbs from 8.5% to 11.5% with Looting III.
Notably, the bonus applies to any kill made while the sword sits in your main hand. Shoot a mob with a bow, switch to the Looting sword before the arrow lands, and you still get the extra drops.
5. Sweeping Edge (Java only)
Max level: III
Editions: Java
Conflicts with: Nothing on a sword
Without this enchantment, a sweep attack deals just 1 damage to nearby mobs. A diamond sword with Sharpness V and Sweeping Edge III deals 8.5 damage to each mob caught in the sweep.

Sweeps only trigger when you stand on the ground, aren’t sprinting and swing at 84.8% charge or higher. Bedrock has no sweep attack at all, so Bedrock players can use this slot for Fire Aspect II, with the catch below.
Why Fire Aspect missed the list
Fire Aspect II burns targets for 4 seconds per level and cooks meat drops. However, mobs that die from the burn don’t get Looting applied to their drops.
Mojang’s tracker lists this as a confirmed, unresolved Java issue, bug MC-207034, and a matching Bedrock report exists. If you farm drops, keep Fire Aspect on a second sword for cooked meat instead.
How to stack all five without “Too Expensive!”
Every anvil use raises the sword’s prior work penalty, which follows a 2n + 1 pattern (0, 1, 3, 7, 15, 31). Apply six books to a Java sword one at a time, and the final step alone costs 33 levels. The anvil refuses anything at 40 levels or more.

The fix is simple. Combine books in pairs first, then apply the merged books to the sword. If a sword already shows “Too Expensive!”, a grindstone strips its non-curse enchantments and resets the penalty to zero.
For testing a loadout before spending XP, the /enchant command works in creative worlds. Our Minecraft cheats and commands list covers the syntax.
Wrapping up
Sword enchantments have stayed stable through every 2026 drop, so this setup should hold for a while. The next test is the Ice Caves drop, which Mojang calls its final drop of 2026. Its Frostbite is a zombie variant, so a Smite sword could earn a spot in your hotbar once our Ice Caves guide becomes your survival map.
Sharpness V is the best single pick because it boosts damage against every mob, player and boss. For long-term value, Mending comes a close second.
A sword can take 10 enchantments in total, but Sharpness, Smite and Bane of Arthropods lock each other out. On Java, eight can sit on one sword at once.
No. As of Bedrock 26.60, Bedrock has neither Sweeping Edge nor a sweep attack for it to boost.
Only on kills caused by the burn. If your sword strike lands the final hit, Looting still applies.
Usually not. Knockback pushes mobs out of reach, which slows down farms and lets skeletons reset their aim, so most players leave it off.
