Mojang added Brittle Ice in Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 4 and Bedrock Preview 26.70.20, both released on October 13, 2026. It belongs to the winter-themed Fourth Drop of 2026, alongside the Ice Caves biome, the Frostbite mob and Jukebox playlists.

The block cracks when you stand on it and shatters after 3.6 seconds. Mojang lists the full behavior in the official Java 26.4 Snapshot 4 changelog and the Bedrock Preview 26.70.20 notes. At the time of writing, Mojang hasn’t announced a full release date for the drop, so you need a snapshot or Preview build to get it.

How to access Brittle Ice right now

Brittle Ice only exists in test builds as of October 20, 2026. Back up your worlds first, or create a fresh one.

  • Java Edition: Open the Minecraft Launcher, go to Installations, tick Snapshots, then launch Latest snapshot.
  • Bedrock Edition: Install the free Minecraft Preview app on a supported device and update it to 26.70.20 or later.

Ice Caves and crevasses only appear in newly generated chunks. Old terrain won’t have them, so travel to unexplored land or start a new world.

Method 1: Mine Brittle Ice from Ice Cave crevasses

Brittle Ice generates naturally only in Ice Caves, a new cave biome under cold Overworld biomes. It covers the openings of crevasses, narrow ravines with water pools at the bottom.

  1. Enchant a pickaxe with Silk Touch. Without it, Brittle Ice drops nothing.
  2. Head underground beneath a cold biome and look for Packed Ice, Calcite and hanging Icicles, the signature blocks of Ice Caves.
  3. Spot the crevasse by its slightly see-through, cracked ice sheet on the cave floor.
  4. Stand on a solid block at the edge, not on the ice itself.
  5. Mine the Brittle Ice from the edge inward with your Silk Touch pickaxe.

Importantly, work slowly here. When a Brittle Ice block fully breaks, every adjacent Brittle Ice block advances one crack stage. A careless break can weaken the whole sheet while Frostbites throw Ice Balls at you from range.

Method 2: Farm Brittle Ice with Blue Ice and water

This is the renewable option and works anywhere. Water that touches Blue Ice horizontally turns into Brittle Ice.

  1. Craft a Bucket with 3 Iron Ingots and fill it with water.
  2. Mine Blue Ice from icebergs in frozen oceans with a Silk Touch pickaxe.
  3. Dig a one-block channel on flat ground and place the Blue Ice at one end.
  4. Pour water into the channel so it flows into the side of the Blue Ice.
  5. Break the new Brittle Ice with Silk Touch and pour again to repeat.

Notably, Brittle Ice doesn’t leave water behind when broken, unlike Frosted Ice. You need to pour fresh water for every block.

How Brittle Ice cracking works

Brittle Ice has four stages, from intact to fully cracked. The first crack happens the moment an entity steps on it, then it advances one stage every 1.2 seconds of standing.

These rules decide whether it holds:

  • Cracks it: Players, most mobs, armor stands, and entities standing on carpets, trapdoors or thin snow layers placed on top.
  • Leaves it alone: Frostbites, boats, minecarts, projectiles and dropped items, even with a player riding the boat or minecart.
  • Keeps its damage: Stepping off pauses the cracking, but the block stays at its current stage. A fully cracked block breaks instantly under the next entity.
  • Ignores game rules: Mobs still break it with mob griefing turned off.

Moreover, cracking creates vibrations that trigger nearby Sculk Sensors. That makes Brittle Ice a solid trigger for traps and alarm doors.

Brittle Ice is the only one that fails under your weight. Boats still reach the same top speed on it as on Ice, so a boat road over Brittle Ice stays fast and safe.

Brittle Ice turns Ice Caves into a real hazard and gives builders a new tool for traps, parkour and collapsing floors. The Blue Ice method is the faster way to stock up. Since Brittle Ice is still in testing, details like crack timing or the small Java and Bedrock differences could change before the Fourth Drop of 2026 goes live.
