The time is finally here. Epic Games has confirmed that Fortnite: Save the World, the original PvE mode that launched before Battle Royale, will become free-to-play. The move comes nearly a decade after the mode first launched in early access. If you’re a newer Fortnite player, chances are you’ve never experienced the mode before. Now, you finally have the chance. Keep reading to learn more about Fortnite Save the World and how to play it.
What Is Fortnite Save the World?
For those unaware, Save the World is Fortnite’s original game mode, focused on cooperative PvE gameplay rather than competitive battle royale. This fun mode lets players team up in squads of four, build a fort, and try to defend objectives against waves of enemies called Husks.
Unlike Battle Royale’s competitive gameplay, Save the World focuses on team-based missions, base building, and fighting AI enemies. The base building included walls, traps, full forts, and other structures.

As you can tell by now, Fortnite Save the World was more of a mix of tower defense mechanics combined with resource gathering and crafting. Players could also choose from hero classes and upgrade their weapons. While Fortnite BR mode resets every match, Save the World focuses on long-term progression.
Epic originally offered Save the World as a paid mode, with Founder’s Packs priced at $39.99. It was then reduced to $19.99 with a bundle that also included Fortnite V-Bucks. However, as of a few days ago, the bundle has been pulled from stores.
