GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026, and it carries an adults-only rating in every major market. The real question for parents is whether a 15 or 16-year-old can handle it, and the answer depends on three details the box label doesn’t spell out. Our GTA 6 vs GTA 5 breakdown covers how the two games differ in play.
Rockstar confirmed the ESRB’s M for Mature 17+ rating for Grand Theft Auto VI on October 1, 2026, with the same seven content descriptors as GTA 5. However, one label from GTA 5 is missing, and it changes the safety picture more than any descriptor does.
What GTA 6 is rated around the world
Every rating board that has assessed GTA 6 has restricted it to adults. Here’s where it stands as of October 31, 2026.
| Region | Board | Rating |
|---|---|---|
| US and Canada | ESRB | M (Mature 17+) |
| UK and Europe | PEGI | 18 |
| Germany | USK | 18 |
| Japan | CERO | Z (18+ only) |
| Australia | ACB | R18+ |
| New Zealand | Classification Office | R18 |
| South Korea | GCRB | 19+ |
| Brazil | ClassInd | 18 |
| Saudi Arabia and UAE | Store age badge | 21+ |
Importantly, R18+ in Australia and R18 in New Zealand are legal restrictions, not advice. In the US, the M rating is guidance, and retailers enforce it by policy rather than law.
What’s actually in the game

The ESRB lists Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. Those labels describe themes. The detail parents need came from PEGI’s rating summary, which PEGI posted on October 2, 2026 and removed the same day without explanation.
According to that pulled summary, which Rockstar has not confirmed:
- Violence: Bloody and realistic, with some weapons causing decapitation and dismemberment. You can harm civilians, police, and animals.
- Drugs: You can carry cocaine in your inventory and use it at any time, alone or with other characters.
- Sex and nudity: The game shows nudity and sexual intercourse. You can pay for private dances at clubs and touch the dancers.
The key difference from a violent movie is control. Your child doesn’t watch these acts happen; they choose to do them. The game’s weapons list shows how central combat is to the core loop.
The missing label: No online play at launch
GTA 5’s ESRB rating includes Users Interact, which flags chat and contact with strangers through GTA Online. GTA 6’s rating doesn’t carry it.
That lines up with the official listing. The PlayStation Store page calls GTA 6 “a single-player experience” with no multiplayer modes. At launch, your child won’t meet strangers, receive voice chat, or get scammed for in-game cash inside the game.
However, this could change. Rockstar has not ruled out a future online mode and has declined to discuss one. If that arrives, revisit your decision, since online play brings a separate set of risks.
What “In-Game Purchases” means here

The ESRB rating includes In-Game Purchases, but not the stricter “Includes Random Items” label used for loot boxes. Currently, the main paid add-on is the Ultimate Edition Upgrade for owners of the standard game.
The Standard Edition costs $79.99 and the Ultimate Edition costs $99.99 on the PlayStation Store. Our Standard vs Ultimate Edition guide lists what the extra $20 adds. Spending inside the story uses fictional cash only, as our list of GTA 6 money sinks explains.
Should your child play it? An age-based answer

There’s no single right answer, but the content and ratings point to a clear framework.
- Under 13: A firm no. The sexual content and drug use go well beyond what most families accept at this age.
- 13 to 16: Watch first, decide second. Sit in on an hour of play or a full gameplay video. Notably, the story follows two adult criminals, so the crime isn’t optional side content.
- 17 and over: This is the rated audience in the US. Even so, a talk about the gap between satire and real behavior helps.
Also consider whether your child already sees GTA 6 on YouTube or Twitch. Blocking the game doesn’t block the clips, so a conversation often does more than a hard ban.
How to block GTA 6 on PS5 and Xbox

On PS5, child accounts can’t download or launch games above the age level you set.
- Go to Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
- Select your child’s account and open Parental Controls.
- Set Age level for games and apps below 17 (ESRB) or 18 (PEGI).
- Open Monthly Spending Limit and keep it at 0, which is the default for child accounts.
- Use Playtime Settings to cap daily play if you allow the game.
On Xbox Series X|S, the Xbox Family Settings app does the same job. Select your child, open Content restrictions, and set the allowed age below 17. Additionally, turn on Ask to buy so purchases need your approval. Sony’s PS5 parental controls page covers the web and PS Family app options.

Wrapping up
GTA 6 is a game made for adults, and every rating board agrees. Still, the single-player launch removes the biggest risk GTA 5 carried, which was contact with strangers online.
For teens close to 17, a supervised first session tells you more than any label. Watch Rockstar’s announcements, since an online mode would change the calculation again.
GTA 6 is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB and 18 by PEGI. Australia rates it R18+, Japan rates it CERO Z, and South Korea rates it 19+.
No, not at launch. The PlayStation Store lists it as a single-player game, and its ESRB rating lacks the Users Interact label.
US ratings are advisory, so nothing legally stops it, but the game contains strong sexual content, interactive drug use, and graphic violence. Most parents of 14-year-olds will want to preview it first.
No. The ESRB rating doesn’t include the “Includes Random Items” label. Its only listed purchase is optional paid content such as the Ultimate Edition Upgrade.
Both games carry the same seven ESRB descriptors. The removed PEGI summary mentions decapitation and dismemberment, which suggests more graphic detail, but Rockstar hasn’t confirmed it.
