GTA 6 map vs GTA 5 map

Rockstar co-studio head Aaron Garbut told Game Informer that Leonida is twice the size of GTA 5’s map and the studio’s largest ever, as reported by VGC on September 29, 2026. GTA 5 split its world into one city, one desert county and Mount Chiliad. GTA 6 splits Leonida into six regions:
- Vice City: Miami-inspired city with Art Deco streets, beaches and a cruise port
- Leonida Keys: Island chain based on the Florida Keys
- Grassrivers: Everglades-style wetland
- Port Gellhorn: Fading tourist towns with cheap motels
- Ambrosia: Factory and refinery belt where a biker gang holds sway
- Mount Kalaga National Park: Northern wilderness drawing on the Florida-Georgia border
Size isn’t the headline, though. Garbut said the team pushed rooftops, alleys and interiors to a “critical mass,” a direct answer to GTA 5, where most buildings stay closed.
Weather also gets an overhaul. Rockstar re-engineered it to be localized and persistent, so rain can fall in one area while another stays clear. Leonida also holds 170+ animal species, including more than 60 bird types.
Two protagonists replace three

GTA 5 let you swap between Michael, Franklin and Trevor through a character wheel, each with a separate life. GTA 6 builds the story around Jason and Lucia, a criminal couple. You can switch between them at almost any time, either playing together or splitting up.
Previews report that your choices shape their relationship, but you can’t end the partnership. Our Lucia character guide covers everything confirmed about her story.
The wanted system now tracks evidence

In GTA 5, breaking line of sight and hiding cleared five-star chases. That trick no longer works on its own. GTA 6 adds a sixth star and shows evidence icons under the stars: CCTV footage, your face, your outfit, your weapon, your car and whether Jason and Lucia were seen together.
Each icon needs a fix, such as swapping clothes, ditching the gun or changing cars. Police also respond only when an NPC reports a crime or an alarm triggers. Our GTA 6 HUD breakdown explains every star style, and this guide shows how to avoid the police before a chase starts.
Combat, cars and daily life

GTA 5 gave each lead a unique special ability: Michael’s bullet time, Franklin’s slow-motion driving and Trevor’s rage. GTA 6 replaces them with a shared Focus meter that slows time, highlights weak points and reveals police through walls. Check the full GTA 6 weapons list for every confirmed gun.
Car theft gets layers too. Some vehicles open the old way, others need specialized tools, and high-end cars carry security systems and trackers. Additionally, a ride-share app replaces GTA 5’s taxis for fast travel, and the phone now has a scrollable social media feed. The Extended Look on August 27, 2026, also showed deeper vehicle customization.
The campaign also looks far longer. Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson told The New York Times his playthrough took 80 hours with optional story goals, as TechRadar reported. GTA 5’s main story takes about 30 hours.
What GTA 6 leaves out at launch
Some GTA 5 staples won’t be there on November 19:
- GTA Online: Rockstar describes GTA 6 as “a single-player experience” with no online timeline
- First-person mode: Rockstar’s Rob Nelson reportedly said the game is built around a third-person camera
- PC version: Not announced; GamesBeat reports a Q1 2027 window, which Rockstar hasn’t confirmed
- Last-gen consoles: No PS4 or Xbox One version
- Disc: Physical boxes contain only a download code
Hence, GTA Online on GTA 5 remains Rockstar’s multiplayer game for now. Digital pre-orders even include a free month of GTA+, which gives access to GTA 5.

Signing Off
GTA 6 doesn’t just enlarge GTA 5’s formula. It trades a three-lead story for one partnership, replaces line-of-sight escapes with evidence management and swaps empty facades for enterable buildings.
However, it launches with fewer platforms and no online mode. Rockstar may announce GTA Online and PC plans after launch, so expect GTA 5 to stay relevant well into 2027.
