M6 vs M5 MacBook Pro

If you bought an M5 MacBook Pro in the last year, Apple’s newest laptop probably made you nervous. New chip, new name, same $1,999 price. Did you just get leapfrogged?

Short answer: not really. Apple announced the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 on October 27, 2026. Pre-orders opened October 28, and the laptop reaches customers on November 6. It’s a chip and wireless upgrade inside the exact chassis the M5 shipped in, and Apple has now discontinued the M5 model it replaces.

Here’s what the spec sheet hides, and how to decide which one belongs on your desk.

The “M6 MacBook Pro” You’re Picturing Doesn’t Exist

A day after the M6 launch, Apple announced the touchscreen MacBook Pro with a tandem OLED panel it calls the PROLED XDR display. No notch, a Dynamic Island, a glowing rear Apple logo, Thunderbolt 5, and half a pound less weight per size.

Here’s the catch most headlines skipped: that machine runs the M5 Pro and M5 Max, the same chips Apple shipped in March. It starts at $2,899 for the 14-inch and $3,399 for the 16-inch.

So the only Mac laptop with an M6 today is the base 14-inch, with a mini-LED screen, no touch, and the old design. If you searched “M6 MacBook Pro” hoping for OLED, you want a different laptop with an older chip. Apple hasn’t announced an M6 Pro or M6 Max MacBook Pro.

M6 vs M5 Chip: More Cores, but Fewer of the Fastest Ones

The core count goes up from 10 to 12, but read the breakdown. The M5 has four super cores (Apple’s top-tier performance cores). The M6 has two, plus four new mid-tier performance cores.

That trade makes sense once you see the numbers. A single Geekbench 7 result from the M6 Mac mini, spotted by MacRumors on September 15, scored 4,071 single-core and 22,783 multi-core. The M5 MacBook Pro averages 3,641 and 17,948. That’s roughly 12% faster on one core and 27% faster across all of them. Treat it as an early, unverified data point until independent reviews land after November 6.

The single-core lead suggests the M6 gives up nothing in snappiness despite having two fewer super cores. The four mid-tier cores carry exports, compiles, and anything else that spreads across threads.

Apple’s own M6 vs M5 claims are modest:

  • Up to 30% faster graphics
  • Up to 1.3x faster Xcode builds and Blender renders
  • Up to 1.2x faster Affinity image processing
  • Up to 1.3x faster LLM prompt processing

If you run local AI models, the dual Neural Engine and GPU Neural Accelerators are where the M6 pulls furthest ahead. Apple claims the Neural Engine alone is up to 1.9x faster than the M5’s. For email, browsing, and Office, you won’t feel a difference.

The Memory Bandwidth Boost Skips the Base Model

This detail changes how you should configure an M6. The bump from 153GB/s to 170GB/s only applies to the 24GB and 32GB models. The $1,999 16GB base model keeps the same 153GB/s as the M5.

Bandwidth matters most for GPU work and on-device AI, the exact areas Apple markets the M6 on. If those tasks are why you’re buying, 24GB isn’t just more room. It unlocks the full chip.

Maximum memory stays at 32GB on both generations. Need more? The M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro models scale up to 128GB.

Wi-Fi 7 and Faster External Displays Are the Sleeper Upgrades

The M6 drops Broadcom for Apple’s own N1 wireless chip, adding Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread. You only benefit from Wi-Fi 7 if your router supports it. On a Wi-Fi 6 router at home, the M5 and M6 connect at similar speeds.

External display support moves from 144Hz to 165Hz on two 4K monitors. That’s a niche win, but if you already own a 165Hz monitor, the M5 left those extra frames on the table.

What Stays Exactly the Same

Open the lid on both and you can’t tell them apart. Same 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display at 3024 x 1964, same 120Hz ProMotion, same 1600-nit HDR peak, same 12MP Center Stage camera, same six speakers, same ports.

Battery life is identical too. Apple calls the M6’s 24 hours “the longest ever in a Mac,” but the M5 already hit that figure. The 2nm efficiency gain went into more cores, not more runtime.

Both run macOS 27 Golden Gate (grab the official macOS 27 Golden Gate wallpapers while you’re at it), and both support Apple Intelligence. Siri AI is still in beta in macOS 27.2 with regional and language limits, so don’t buy either laptop for it alone. Our breakdown of everything new in Siri AI covers what it can do so far.

Because the chassis and ports haven’t changed, every case, sleeve, and hub built for the M5 fits the M6. Our list of the best accessories for the 14-inch MacBook Pro applies to both.

M6 vs M5 MacBook Pro Price: Same Number, Different Story

The M6 starts at $1,999 in the US ($1,899 with education pricing) and ₹2,39,900 in India, with 16GB of memory and 1TB of storage.

That $1,999 matches what the M5 cost when Apple discontinued it, so on paper you get more chip for the same money. But the M5 launched at $1,599 with 512GB in October 2025. Apple dropped the 512GB option in March 2026, raising the entry price to $1,699, then hiked it to $1,999 in June amid rising memory and storage costs. Measured from the M5’s launch, the entry-level MacBook Pro now costs $400 more.

Retailers are clearing M5 stock. On October 27, AppleInsider reported an M5 configuration with 32GB of memory selling for $1,999, a $420 cut. At the same price, you’re choosing between double the memory (M5) and a newer chip with faster wireless (M6). For heavy multitasking or large AI models, the 32GB M5 is the smarter buy.

Should You Upgrade From M5, or Buy the M6?

Your current Mac decides this more than the M6 does.

  • You own an M5 MacBook Pro. Skip it. Same screen, same battery, same ports, and a 12% to 30% speed bump won’t change your day.
  • You own an M1 or M2. The M6 makes sense. Apple claims up to 2.5x faster Xcode builds and up to 11.7x faster Blender renders versus the M1, plus up to four hours of extra battery.
  • You’re on an Intel Mac. Buy whichever Apple silicon MacBook Pro fits your budget. Apple quotes up to 14 extra hours of battery over Intel models, and either chip will feel like a different class of machine.
  • You want OLED and touch. Look at the $2,899 PROLED model, knowing you’re paying for the screen, not a newer chip.

One more option: MacRumors reports Apple is planning a redesigned entry-level MacBook Pro with an M7 chip as early as the first half of 2027. Apple hasn’t confirmed it, but if you want the new design at a lower price, waiting is reasonable.

Quick Answers

Is the M6 MacBook Pro a touchscreen? No. Only the PROLED XDR MacBook Pro has touch, and it runs M5 Pro or M5 Max.

When can you buy the M6 MacBook Pro? Pre-orders opened October 28, 2026, in 35 countries and regions. Deliveries and in-store availability start November 6, 2026.

Can you still buy the M5 MacBook Pro? Not new from Apple. The M6 replaced it, but third-party retailers are still selling remaining stock, often at a discount.

Signing off

The M6 is a better chip in a laptop you already know. More cores, 2nm efficiency, Wi-Fi 7, and a real boost for local AI, if you pay for 24GB. M5 owners have nothing to regret. For everyone else, the deciding factor isn’t M6 vs M5. It’s whether a discounted 32GB M5 beats a 16GB M6 for the way you work.
