Fortnite’s 9th Birthday event went live on September 21, 2026, and runs until October 1. It brought cake-themed quests, free cosmetics, and returning favorites like Birthday Presents and Balloons into Chapter 7 Season 4, titled Override. However, the event’s biggest gameplay addition hasn’t arrived yet: the Birthday Sprite.
Unlike most birthday items, this one does more than look festive. It turns ordinary looting into a steady supply of healing. In a season built around extracting sprites and surviving long enough to keep them, that makes it one of the more practical sprites of Override. Here’s what it does, when it drops, and how to grab it early.
When is the Birthday Sprite coming to Fortnite?
The Birthday Sprite arrives on September 26, 2026. That’s exactly nine years after Fortnite Battle Royale launched on September 26, 2017. Leakers and most outlets agree on this date, and Epic has scheduled the event’s anniversary rewards for the same day.
A few sites listed September 24 instead, since new sprites usually drop on Thursdays. The Saturday date looks far more likely. The sprite files arrived early in the v42.20 update on September 17, so Epic can switch the sprite on without a patch.
Saturday also happens to be Sprite Power Hour day. Based on the current Sprite Power Hour schedule, boosted drop rates run twice on Saturdays:
- 11:00 AM PT to 1:00 PM PT (2:00 PM ET to 4:00 PM ET)
- 6:00 PM PT to 8:00 PM PT (9:00 PM ET to 11:00 PM ET)
If the schedule holds on September 26, you get your best shot at the sprite on its first day.
What the Birthday Sprite does
- Primary trigger: Opening chests has a chance to spawn a slice of Birthday Cake
- Scaling: The spawn chance increases each time the sprite levels up
- Max-level bonus: Eliminations can also spawn cake
- Effect: Birthday Cake restores both health and shield
- Rarity tier: Rare (per early sprite trackers; may change at launch)
Most healing sprites need you to spend consumables or stay in one spot. The Birthday Sprite rewards what you already do all match: opening chests and taking fights. Moreover, since the max-level bonus works on eliminations, aggressive players can heal between fights without stopping to loot.
Interestingly, this isn’t the ability first leaked. In August, dataminer FireMonkey reported that the Birthday Sprite would spawn Balloons, three of them at level 5. Epic apparently scrapped that idea for healing. Balloons came back separately as part of the event’s unvaulted items instead.
Birthday Sprite variants
The v42.20 files include four variants beyond the base sprite. Fortnite.GG already lists the Loot Hacker version in its database.

Epic tends to spread variants out over the weeks after a sprite launches, so don’t expect all five on day one. Keep an eye on the latest Admin Panel Lobby Hack codes in case one targets this sprite.
How to get the Birthday Sprite on launch day
- Load into Battle Royale on or after September 26 and head toward high, mountainous areas of the map. The v42.20 files tag the sprite as spawning there.
- Open chests and look out for wandering sprites along the way. Like other Override sprites, it can turn up in chests or roam the island.
- Play during a Sprite Power Hour to boost your odds.
- Extract the sprite at an extraction site, or win the match, to keep it. Sprites you don’t extract are lost when you’re eliminated.
- Level it up in later matches by looting chests. Mastering it cuts its re-summon cost in half.

Birthday Sprite vs. the 9th Birthday skin
Some coverage mixes these two up. The 9th Birthday Outfit comes from mastering 28 sprites during Chapter 7 Season 4. The Birthday Sprite is a separate collectible you find in matches, and nothing indicates you need 28 masteries to unlock it. That said, mastering the Birthday Sprite does count toward the 28-sprite total.

The Birthday Sprite should arrive as a Rare sprite with a hard deadline behind it. The event ends on October 1, but sprites you’ve extracted remain in your collection after that.
