How to Use Spotify Inside ChatGPT to Build Instant Playlists

Connect Spotify to ChatGPT and turn your thoughts into playlists. Play, create, and discover music that perfectly fits your mood, all inside one chat.

Now ChatGPT can control your apps too, and one of them is Spotify. It’s not turned on by default, so you’ll need to connect your Spotify account first. Once you do that, ChatGPT can play any song, album, or playlist you ask for, and it can even create playlists for you.

Just describe the kind of music you’re in the mood for, like relaxing Sunday tracks or upbeat workout songs, and it’ll instantly build a personalized playlist that matches your vibe. Here’s everything you need to know and how to set it up.

What You Can Do With Spotify Inside ChatGPT

With this new app feature, ChatGPT can now perform specific actions in connected apps, instead of just recommending songs. Just mention Spotify and tell ChatGPT what you want it to do, and it will handle that directly inside Spotify. Here are a few examples:

  • Create playlists for any mood, moment, or theme. You can specify length, energy, era, or even rules like “only 90s alt rock” or “include my top artists.”
  • Get recommendations for songs, albums, artists, or podcasts based on your likes and listening history.
  • Open results directly in Spotify with a tap, so playback continues in the app you already use.
  • Control Spotify from the chat: play, pause, skip, add/remove from your library, follow/unfollow artists, and create or edit playlists.

Well, most of these things you can do inside Spotify with just a few clicks. Spotify already has its own AI features for creating playlists. Where ChatGPT really stands out is in understanding your intent. It listens to the story in your head, not just your play history.

Say “rainy city, neon lights, slow build,” and it instantly gets the vibe and builds a tracklist that fits. In our experience, the playlists it creates match exactly what we were looking for..

Do you need Spotify Premium or ChatGPT Plus?

ChatGPT Plus or Pro gives you access to faster models, but the Spotify integration itself is available to everyone. However, there’s one small difference. Spotify Premium users can create playlists using ChatGPT, while free users can only play songs, albums, or existing playlists.

Also, you ask ChatGPT to merge your existing playlists; however, we are not able to make it work, even through the Premium version. But you can still merge playlists in Spotify manually.

One more thing to note for all users: this currently works only in English, but support for more languages is coming soon.

How to Connect Spotify to ChatGPT (One-time Setup)

First, you need to connect your Spotify account with ChatGPT. Once done, ChatGPT will be able to control your app from later chats. Currently, you can connect to and use Spotify in the ChatGPT web and mobile apps; desktop app support is yet to arrive.

On ChatGPT Webapp:

  1. Open ChatGPT (app or web) and click the Profile icon at the bottom-left corner.
  2. Select the Settings option.
Open chatgpt settings by clicking profile icon on app or web interface
  3. In the pop-up, select Apps and connectors.
Select apps and connectors option in chatgpt settings menu

You can disconnect anytime in settings. Reconnecting is just as quick.

To personalize results, ChatGPT can use your likes, playlists, listening history, and basic account info. Your IP address and approximate location may be shared for context.

Spotify says it does not share music, podcasts, or creator content with OpenAI for model training. You can revoke access whenever you want if this concerns you.

How to Play Spotify Songs and Playlists in ChatGPT

Once connected, playback flows naturally. Just click the Plus (+) icon in the chat box and select Spotify. Alternatively, you can just mention Spotify in the prompt, and the AI will pick it up.

Play spotify songs and playlists on chatgpt
  • Ask for a specific track/album/artist: “Play Motion Picture Soundtrack by Radiohead.”
  • Ask for something similar: “Find songs like Lose Yourself to Dance but slower.”
  • Ask for podcasts: “Queue tech interviews under 45 minutes, focus on AI founders.”
  • Tap the card to open in Spotify, or let ChatGPT handle controls right there: play/pause/skip, add to library, follow.

Tip: If you prefer deeper cuts, say it. Example: “Go deep cuts only, avoid top 10 tracks for each artist.”

How to Create Spotify Playlists Using ChatGPT

Similar to playing songs, you can just ask ChatGPT to create a playlist, and it will do one for you. However, we observed better results when we gave clear constraints:

  • Mood & purpose: “Coffeehouse focus,” “solo night walk,” “family dinner,” “coding sprint.”
  • Length: “45 minutes,” “25 songs,” “2 hours.”
  • Rules: “only 2010–2016,” “no explicit,” “female vocalists,” “add 3 classics at the end.”
  • Taste anchors: “start from my top artists,” “lean indie folk,” “sprinkle Japanese city pop.”

You can get more detailed in your prompts to actually get picks that match your needs. Example prompts you can copy:

  • “Spotify, make a 90‑minute road‑trip playlist that starts mellow and ramps up after 30 minutes. Use mostly indie rock and throw in 3 synthwave tracks.”
  • “New music only, last 6 months, similar to my liked songs but avoid artists I follow.”
  • “Soft piano + ambient for reading in the rain. 25 tracks, no vocals, no movie scores.”

When the list appears, skim the preview, tap to open in Spotify, then save or edit. You can also say “swap 5 tracks for lesser‑known picks” and ChatGPT will adjust your existing playlist.

What Other Apps Work Inside ChatGPT?

Spotify is one of several apps that now live inside your chats. Others include Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Figma, and Zillow. ChatGPT can suggest them when they fit the moment (trip planning, a quick design, a course recap, home browsing, etc.). You stay in the same conversation and trigger different apps one after another if wanted.

Limitations and Tips

  • Language: Rolling out in English first. If you need another language, say so in your prompt; support is expanding.
  • Popularity bias: Like most recommenders, results may lean popular. Ask for “deep cuts,” “underground,” or “non‑mainstream” if you want to explore.
  • Be specific: The more you describe the vibe and rules, the better the playlist. Think like a creative brief, not a keyword search.

Turn Thoughts into Playlists

This is the easiest way to go from a feeling in your head to music in your ears. Tell ChatGPT the scene you want, where you are, what you’re doing, and how you want it to feel, and it will turn that into a playlist that actually fits your life. Less scrolling. More listening.
